The Universe of Liu Kuo-Sung is a VR video created through a collaboration between Huang Hsin-Chien and Chang Wen-Chieh in 2019 when the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts arranged “To the Moon,” a special exhibition for Liu Kuo-Sung, the father of modern ink, commemorating the 70th anniversary of his arrival in Taiwan. The work harnesses the traits of VR technology to transform the paintings in the exhibition into a virtual world, allowing audiences to enter the world of Liu’s paintings through different viewing angles. The Universe of Liu Kuo-Sung is composed of three scenes: “Observation,” “Play,” and “Enter,” corresponding to Liu’s three different painting styles: “Separating the Heaven from the Earth,” “Free Rendering of the Canvas,” and “Which is Earth.” The “Observation/ Separating the Heaven from the Earth” section guides viewers into the grandeur of Liu’s modern ink paintings, “Play/ Free Rendering of the Canvas” showcases Liu’s free creative renderings, and “Enter/ Which is Earth” transcends the physical sceneries of the world and enters the view of the universe, manifesting how Liu’s works are rooted in landscapes but ultimately advance to envelop the universe in its vast artistic mindscape.
Through The Universe of Liu Kuo-Sung, Huang Hsin-Chien re-constructs his understanding of Liu’s modern ink into a world of painting through VR, transforming the original two-dimensional ink landscape into a technological world that allows audiences to immerse themselves and wander within. The previous act of “viewing” becomes an “immersive” experience that encourages new interactions with the works.
